Q: How do you find your Brand Hex/RGB Codes?
This is the way I do it:
When designing graphics for your business, you will need to know your brand hex code to keep your designs consistent and on-brand. If you don’t have, or can’t find the original brand kit from your designer, you may be guessing or choosing the closest thing to what looks like the colours in your logo, or on your website, which is not ideal.
There is an easier way!
There are Google Chrome Extensions that you can use that will help you to identify the Hex Code and the RGB Code for your brands and it’s very easy to implement.
Here are the steps:
- Go to the Google Webstore – https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions
- Ensure extensions is highlighted and in the search bar type “eyedropper”
3. Choose an eyedropper extension from the list provided and select the “Add to Chrome” button, and then the “Add extension” option
You will then see the eyedropper extension in your extensions list at the top of the page.
When you want to know the hex number of a colour, select the eyedropper extension from the top of your page and then go to an area of your website, or a location that has your brand colour, such as your logo.
Some eyedropper tools require you to hover your mouse over the colour you are looking to get the Hex code. Other eyedropper tools use a selection tool where you will click and drag a small area of the colour and that will bring up both the Hex and the RGB colours – whichever eyedropper tool you use, make a note of the colour displays.
The Hex Code starts with a #
When creating graphics for your social media posts/website etc. you will use the Hex code of your brand colours to ensure consistency, as opposed to using a colour that looks similar.
Colour Matching
There is also a way to see what other colours match your brand colours, if you want to use different colours in your designs. One website that does this really well is Coolers.co – click here and add a hex code from your brand colours to get an idea of other colours that will pair nicely with it.
Click on the lock icon and then press the space bar to get suggestions of the colours that match this first locked colour, when you are happy with the second colour, lock that and press the spacebar and repeat.
You can then make a note of the Hex Colours. Use these in Canva, Adobe In Design or whatever you are using to create your designs.
Note: If you are creating slides in PowerPoint, you will need to use the RGB colours of your brand. If you only know the Hex Code you can use your eyedropper tool to find out what the RGB codes are. Alternatively, there are sites such as hextorgb.co that convert your Hex code to RGB.
Happy Designing!
